Data : Data involving one and two variables
Task
Canoe Rentals
Situation
A canoe rental company needs to renew its inventory of life jackets. You need to advise them on the number of life jackets the company should purchase for each size.
Procedure
Students should:
- ask questions to fully understand the problem;
- identify useful information (for example, the number of canoes the company owns, the sizes of the customers, the various sizes of life jackets, the types of life jackets);
- make assumptions (for example, types of customers, the ratio of adults to children);
- determine the data to be collected to answer the question;
- collect and analyze the data;
- create and present a model to answer what and how many life jackets should be purchased.
Reflection
- What specific learning content might be involved in this learning task?
- How can the mathematical modelling process be used to conduct a meaningful data analysis for the students?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of having students collect data and create a model versus providing the data to students or asking them to analyze provided models?
